John Law Meem, Renowned Santa Fe Architect

John Gaw Meem came to Santa Fe seeking the healing virtues of the dry Southwestern climate, which many people with tuberculosis found to be a restorative cure. He thrived in New Mexico and is known for his pivotal role in shaping the Pueblo Revival Style of architecture, a design aesthetic that remains prevalent in Santa Fe homes Today.

Meem is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential architects to have worked in New Mexico, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to define the region’s architectural landscape. Meem was among the first architects to embrace Regionalism, a movement that would come to shape architecture in the 1920s and 1930s.

Drawing from his more eclectic intellect, he combined traditional architectural elements such as battered walls, vigas, and stepped parapets with modern building techniques and materials, creating a unique aesthetic that evoked a particular mood without directly imitating the past. Meem later expanded his focus to the preservation of historic buildings, laying a strong foundation for his future architectural endeavors, many of which earned historic designation.

John Gaw Meem’s impact on Santa Fe was profound. Not only did he design some of the city’s most iconic buildings, but he also led the committee responsible for the 1957 Historical Zoning Ordinance. This pivotal law ensured that all future construction in central Santa Fe adhered to the region’s vernacular style.

While this strict adherence to a singular building tradition faced criticism in the “City Different,” Meem’s design principles continue to influence new developments in Santa Fe today.

SANTA FE AIRPORT has arrived in the 21st Century with airport terminal news worthy of your arrivals and departures. Of course, there were construction delays so a 2023 completion date became a late 2024-2025 date. That said, we are grateful for the new “peachy airport parking,” a new saf airport terminal footprint with additional gates, seating, and baggage claim, as well as an improved check-in area and coffee-snack shop. We have already outgrown the expansion, with the promise of over 400,000 visitors in the very near future for flights to Santa Fe.

There are currently twelve Santa Fe flights per day departing from SAF to four destinations.

Everyone’s a VIP at Fly Santa Fe when it comes to Santa Fe Airport parking! Easy access to the terminal, with no stairs, escalators, or elevators to deal with, makes your time-to-gate exceptionally short.

The Santa Fe Regional Airport offers convenient and affordable long-term parking and short-term parking, steps away from the terminal. A flat prepaid fee of $7.00 a day is charged in all lots, with the first 30 minutes free. Parking in disabled spots is available and conveniently located across from the terminal.

The Santa Fe Airport was originally a military airfield in 1941. There were reports of renovations in 1974 for safety reasons, which actually led to the current reconstruction. In March 2022, the project broke ground, marking a positive shift in the airport perceptiveness. We bid a fond farewell to our quaint adobe terminal and did a meet and greet of a new, all-modern building.

Fortunately, airports in New Mexico have recently received several funding grants, which will bring us into the next proposed phase of construction.

The Santa Fe Regional Airport currently has 12 daily departures and more arrivals. When the airlines research new routes, they are looking for carrying capacity. This is an area where the Santa Fe Airport has performed well, with increased use, especially since the recent expansion reached final completion.

Transportation to and from the airport is a priority for improvement. There are new taxi and rider share stands and companies. We want to provide accommodating transport from the Santa Fe Airport to hotels in Santa Fe and Santa Fe vacation rentals that ease travel arrangements to the exceptional Santa Fe.

Security updates were essential, and cameras have been installed in the parking lots as part of an ongoing security upgrade.

The future includes a new terminal, incorporating the building currently used by FBO, Signature Aviation. There will be a new direct route to Hwy 599, minus the current views of old cars — but that is a Santa Fe thing.  It wouldn’t be a real airport without an airport restaurant and gift shop, so that is also on the agenda. The Santa Fe Airport is operating at about 50% the Albuquerque capacity. All considered, the Santa Fe Airport is in a positive mode.

When they say the “freshest of ingredients,” they mean that all their meats are freshly grilled, including a fine selection of skirt steak, natural New Mexico lamb, Mahi-mahi from off the coast of South America, skinless chicken breasts, and tender pork carnitas, braised and slow-cooked in special spices. The sister restaurants that are an institution in the city of Santa Fe. It is dining that reflects the heritage of the past & present and is yet another locals’ favorite. Their award-winning red and green chile, summer patio dining, full bar, and long-standing quality and consistency have made La Choza a local favorite for delicious traditional Southwest food since 1983. “The red chile plate is sublime and in my humble opinion, the best red chile I’ve ever had. Delicious and worth the wait.   This is definitely a “musty” spot in Santa Fe.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

This is one of the best and hidden destinations in the Rockies, and we love having the opportunity to introduce guests to the beautiful place we call home. Its proximity to the Rocky Mountains and its higher elevation causes wetter, windier, and colder weather than much of the state.  

Even with the wide variety of weather Santa Fe experiences, it still gets 325 days of sunshine, making it the perfect place to visit year-round. From Spring to Fall, the city only gets an average of 14 inches of rain, so you can leave the umbrella at home! While snow might be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of New Mexico, Santa Fe can expect around 32 inches of snow to fall in town throughout the winter and an average of 225 inches on the ski slopes just a short drive away.

All of this results in a drier city that is easy to explore all year around. In the Summer, the weather rarely surpasses 90 degrees, and in the Winter, it can get a chill in the air, but we have an average of 42 degrees, making it pleasant to be outside during your stay.

Winter

Santa Fe has winter from late November and occasionally lasts until the end of March. These months can bring a variety of different weather patterns, such as thrifty fifty-degree days or chilly thirty-degree days. Make sure to pack warm clothes for your stay! Pay close attention to the daily forecast and keep a puffy coat, sweater, and some cords in your luggage, with maybe a hat and gloves. We don’t usually go to a full set of goulashes, but winter waterproof soft-soled shoes are a good idea.  The winter season presents an amazing time to explore various things to do in Santa Fe during Winter, like the ski resort lodging.

Spring

It is always a welcome Spring following the January-February winter season.  The last snow in March brings days of low humidity that struggle to trap heat. But come April and May we enjoy the sun’s warmth and pristine blue skies. From March to April we layer up and layer down depending on the day.  As we get closer to June, we are into summer ware.  

Summer

Summer is similar to spring because of Santa Fe’s high elevation and low humidity. Summer begins around Memorial Day. The days start and end cooler, but the days find their way around 80-90 Fahrenheit. During the Summer, we have a 30-day monsoon season, but we never know exactly what month it will arrive. The monsoons bring a wonderful refresh in the afternoon with temporary showers lasting twenty minutes to an hour. An extra layer of clothing or a sweater will keep you comfortable after the rain subsides and the temperature gradually declines. You may not need it but pack a raincoat if you plan on being out and about during the summer.  Aqui Santa Fe provides umbrellas for rain or shine

Fall

The Fall is the most beautiful time of the year, with soft, mellow breezes and a golden brilliance from the trees.  October is usually warm, but as we approach November, you will be back into the layer-up and layer-down routine.  There is a definite chill in the air as we can get down to 40 degrees at night.  Warmer days land between 70-80 degrees and are perfect for exploring the city in comfy shoes.  After many years of walking on Santa Fe roads, I have found Rothy Shoes to be like Indian Mocassons….you can walk in them forever.  And, they take you shopping during the day and to to your favorite restaurant at night.

Santa Fe Is A Hikers Dream

Santa Fe is nestled amidst the southern tip of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range and the Santa Fe Mountains, making it a hiker’s dream vacation spot. Shady woodlands, wildflower-laden meadows, refreshing waterways, abundant wildlife, and stunning views draw hikers from near and far. 

From a gentle hike through the rolling foothills to enjoying extraordinary views from a mountain peak, there’s something for every hiker. The Dale Ball Trail system is just minutes from downtown. Its varied trails are perfect for both novice hikers as well as those with more experience under their boots.
